The event is intended to teach the fundamentals of crystallography, starting from theoretical group theory and its applications in solid state, and magnetic symmetry.

A workshop where the participants can apply the methods taught directly on their cases at hand as well as having the opportunity to present their work* will go in parallel, as part of the school.

The school will be held at the Energy Institute, located in the Ayazaga campus of the Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Istanbul, Turkey.

* The works that will be presented are subject to referees' jurisdiction. Please use the template from the "Materials" section below to submit your abstract (both for oral and poster presentations).

1st Day: Morning Session (Pre-school session) [MIA]

Matrix calculus applied to crystallography.

   Isometries and crystallographic symmetry operations. Crystallographic point and space-group symmetry operations. Matrix-column presentation of symmetry operations. Symmetry elements: geometric elements and element sets.


1st Day: Afternoon Session [RN + BS]

Introduction to group theory. Crystal lattice vs. crystal pattern and crystal structure. Symmetry directions in a lattice .Unit cells: primitive cells, multiple cells, conventional cells in 2D and 3D. Crystal families. Symmetry groups and types of symmetry in direct space: morphological symmetry; symmetry of physical properties; symmetry of lattices; symmetry of the unit cell content; symmetry of crystallographic patterns.


2nd Day: Morning Session [MIA]

Crystallographic point groups. Stereographic projection and the morphology of crystals. Hermann-Mauguin symbols for point groups.

   Basic properties of groups (group axioms, order, multiplication tables, etc.). Subgroups, index, coset decompositions, Lagrange theorem. Concept of isomorphism and homomorphism. Group actions: conjugation and normalizers.

2nd Day: Afternoon Session [MIA]

Group-subgroup relations (general considerations): index, coset decomposition and normal subgroups; conjugate elements and conjugate subgroups; factor groups and homomorphism.

  Wyckoff positions for point group. Relations of Wyckoff positions for a group-subgroup pair of point groups. Supergroups of point groups.

   Poster contributions-discussion during the coffee break

3rd Day: Morning Session [RN + BS]

Space groups – general introduction: periodic structure of the crystalline matter. Orthogonal projections of space groups. Symmetry-elements and general-position space-group diagrams from Volume A of the International Tables for Crystallography. General and special positions, site-symmetry groups, crystallographic orbits.

   Space groups – general introduction I: Exercises on orthogonal projections of space groups.

   Poster contributions-discussion during the coffee break

Space groups and their description in International Tables for Crystallography, Vol. A. Crystallographic point and space-group symmetry operations. Geometric interpretation of the matrix-column presentation of the symmetry operations. General and special Wyckoff positions. Sections and projections.

Computer databases and access tools to crystallographic symmetry data for space groups (International Tables for Crystallography, Volume A: Space-group symmetry

Transformations of the coordinate systems: change of origin and orientation. Conventional and non-conventional descriptions of space groups; ITA-settings.

5th Day: Morning Session [RN + BS]

Symmetry in reciprocal space. Diffraction symmetry: Laue classes, Friedel's law, resonant scattering. Integral, zonal and serial reflection conditions and their use in the determination of the space-group symmetry. Special reflection conditions.

Structure solution and refinement: introductory strategies.


5th Day: Afternoon Session

Group-subgroup relations between space groups: Subgroups of space groups: types of subgroups of space groups; Hermann theorem; maximal subgroups; series of isomorphic subgroups. Coset decomposition. Relations of Wyckoff positions for a group-subgroup pair. Supergroups of space groups.

  Maximal subgroups data and related computer application in the Bilbao Crystallographic Server.

Crystal-structure descriptions. Descriptions of crystal structures with respect to different ITA settings of the space groups (the program SETSTRU). Equivalent crystal structure descriptions (the programs EQUIVSTRU and COMPSTRU). Crystal-structure descriptions compatible with symmetry reduction (the program TRANSTRU).
